Options for Renewable Energy in Malta

Renewable energy has become increasingly important as we face the challenges of climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Malta has the potential to harness renewable energy from both wind and solar sources.

Here are a few feasible solutions for renewable energy in Malta.

Offshore Wind Farms

Offshore wind farms are a promising source of renewable energy in Malta that could be developed. However, there are two types of offshore wind farms: fixed bottom and floating bottom. Fixed bottom wind farms require a maximum depth of 50m and are not feasible in Malta as our waters are too deep. Floating bottom wind farms, on the other hand, are anchored to the seabed and can be installed in waters up to 800m deep, making them a very strong option for Malta. With the potential to generate significant amounts of energy, floating bottom wind farms are an ideal solution for Malta’s energy needs.

Offshore Solar Farms

Offshore solar farms are another solution that can be considered for renewable energy in Malta. These farms are located on the water’s surface and use photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity. The main advantage of offshore solar farms is that they do not require land, which is in short supply in Malta. However, the installation costs for offshore solar farms can be high, and the maintenance costs can be considerable due to the harsh marine environment.

Onshore Solar Farms

Onshore solar farms are a more traditional solution for renewable energy in Malta. These farms use photovoltaic panels to convert sunlight into electricity and are located on land. One potential disadvantage of onshore solar farms in Malta is that land is scarce and therefore the availability of suitable land for large-scale solar farm installations may be limited. However, they do have lower installation and maintenance costs compared to offshore solar farms.

Onshore Wind Farms

AIS has already investigated the option of onshore wind farms in Malta. Which has been considered not feasible due to the island’s small size and mountainous terrain. However, further studies may be required to determine fully whether onshore wind farms could be developed in certain locations around Malta.
