Project Background
Malta has no indigenous mineral primary energy sources and therefore relies on imported fuels.
Enemalta Corporation is the main producer of electricity in Malta with the demand being mostly met by two Enemalta‐owned power stations, both using heavy fuel oil (HFO) and gasoil.
This includes the new power block, with a capacity of 149MW which was added to Delimara Power station commencing its operation in late 2012.

AIS Environment offered its consultation for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and for the compilation of an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit.

Air dispersion model and thermal dispersion model were also carried out
This was done in order to simulate the circulation patterns of the pollutants in the air and in the marine environment.
AIS was also entrusted to carry out the IPPC permit
Included the preparation of a Cost-Benefit Analysis.
Results
The IPPC permit concluded that an air quality monitoring for particulate matter and heavy metals was due to be conducted at Marsaxlokk and Birzebbugia.
Saharan dust contributions were also calculated and deducted as required by EC guidelines.
