Project Background
The Freeport Terminal 2 Squaring Off Project is a major infrastructure development undertaken by Malta Freeport Terminals to enhance operational efficiency and increase container handling capacity. The project involves extensive dredging and land reclamation works to create additional terminal space and improve berth accessibility for larger vessels.
Given the scale of the marine works and the sensitive environmental and cultural heritage considerations associated with dredging activities, a comprehensive monitoring programme was required to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and minimise impacts on the surrounding environment.
The monitoring programme also required regular liaison with the relevant regulatory authorities, including the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage (SCH).
Client Request
AIS Environment was engaged to provide environmental and archaeological monitoring services throughout the dredging and land reclamation works. The objective was to support Malta Freeport Terminals in meeting permit conditions, safeguarding environmental quality, and ensuring that any archaeological material encountered during dredging activities was appropriately identified, documented, and managed.

Results
Through the implementation of a robust environmental and archaeological monitoring programme, AIS Environment supported the successful progression of the Freeport Terminal 2 Squaring Off Project while ensuring compliance with environmental and cultural heritage obligations.
Continuous monitoring enabled the early identification and management of potential environmental impacts, while archaeological inspections provided assurance that any cultural heritage considerations associated with dredging activities were appropriately addressed. The project demonstrates how large-scale maritime infrastructure developments can be delivered responsibly through effective environmental management, regulatory coordination, and proactive monitoring.
