CLIENT: MINISTRY FOR ENERGY AND WATER

PROJECT BACKGROUND

This project involved the construction of the Malta-Italy gas pipeline which consisted of a terminal station at Delimara Power Station, an onshore route through Delimara Peninsula and the laying of an offshore 22” diameter pipeline extending up to Gela, Sicily. Since the pipeline connects between Malta and Sicily, the authorities of both countries were involved. The interventions included land reclamation and the construction of a Terminal Plant at Delimara.

REQUEST

The project needed both an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and an Appropriate Assessment  (AA).  Both these services would assess if the proposed project falls within the remit of the Regulations and whether it is likely to have a significant effect on the environment. After these assessments, a permit was issued by the Environment & Resources Authority (ERA).
