Traffic in Malta
Being a small island state which is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, the traffic situation in Malta is infamous. With the population's heavy reliance on cars only increasing as the years go by, congestion on Maltese roads is worsening. In 2019, the annual average daily traffic (AADT) on Malta's busiest road, Regional Road, was approximately 57,000 vehicles per day. This statistic means that on average, more than 2,300 vehicles traveled on Regional Road every hour of the day. Pre-COVID motor vehicle statistics from the NSO revealed that over 50 vehicles were being added to our roads every single day.

WHERE DOES AIS COME IN?
At AIS Environment, we understand that effective transportation planning is crucial for the success of any development project. Among our research & analytics services, our team of experienced traffic experts offer comprehensive traffic studies to help our clients make informed decisions regarding transportation infrastructure.
One key measure used in traffic studies is Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT). AADT is a measure of the average number of vehicles that travel on a particular road segment during a 24-hour period over the course of a year. It is a useful tool for transportation planners, architects and engineers to assess the expected traffic demand on a given roadway and plan accordingly.
To calculate AADT, we install traffic counters on a roadway segment for at least one year, and the number of vehicles that pass over the counters is recorded. The total number of vehicles counted during the year is divided by the number of days in the year to get the average daily traffic (ADT). The ADT is then multiplied by a factor to estimate the AADT, which takes into account seasonal variations in traffic volumes. The factor used to estimate AADT varies depending on the location and type of road being studied.
AADT is used in traffic studies to inform decisions regarding transportation infrastructure, including roadway design, traffic signal timings, and pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. In addition, AADT is used to identify potential congestion hotspots and inform the development of mitigation strategies.
At AIS Environment, we use AADT as part of our traffic study services to assess the traffic impacts of new developments such as hotels, supermarkets and many more. Our traffic study services are designed to provide our clients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their transportation infrastructure investments. Our team of experienced traffic experts work closely with our clients to understand their specific needs and develop customised solutions to meet their goals.

Our traffic studies include a comprehensive analysis of traffic patterns and demand on the surrounding transportation network. We use a range of tools and techniques to collect and analyse data, including traffic counts, AADT calculations, and computer simulations. Our team also conducts site visits to assess existing conditions and potential impacts of the development on the surrounding transportation network.
One of the key benefits of our traffic studies is the identification of potential transportation impacts of a development before construction begins. By conducting a thorough analysis of the expected traffic demand, we can identify potential congestion hotspots, safety concerns, and other impacts on the surrounding transportation network. This information can be used to develop customized mitigation strategies, including improvements to roadway design, signal timings, and pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.
At AIS Environment, we understand the importance of sustainable transportation planning and the impact that transportation infrastructure can have on the environment and quality of life. Working closely with Transport Malta, our traffic study services are designed to support sustainable development by providing our clients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their transportation infrastructure investments. By working closely with our clients and using a range of tools and techniques, including AADT calculations, we can help ensure that transportation infrastructure is designed to meet the needs of all users, including motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.

In our small, densely-populated island, we must take control of our traffic problem. AADT is an important measure for transportation planners and engineers to assess the expected traffic demand on a given roadway. At AIS Environment, we use AADT as part of our traffic study services to provide our clients with the information they need to make informed decisions about their transportation infrastructure investments. Our team of experienced traffic experts closely with our clients to develop customised solutions to meet their specific needs and goals.
