Water Bodies Studies

Water Bodies in Malta

Malta is a small island country located in the Mediterranean Sea, and it is home to various types of water bodies, including inland surface waters, groundwater, transitional waters and coastal waters.

Malta has a number of inland surface waters, such as the Chadwick Lakes and Wied il-Luq that runs through Buskett Gardens. The country has delineated five transitional waters, which are areas where freshwater and seawater mix. These include is-Salini, the Għadira nature reserve and il-Magħluq ta' Marsascala. Additionally, the country has marine waters surrounding its coastline which are one of the island's most attractive features to tourists. All these sites are important for wildlife and biodiversity. As an island, it has always relied heavily on groundwater for drinking water supply and irrigation, which has now become sparse.

WHERE DOES AIS COME IN?

Among our research & analytics services, we perform studies on water bodies to provide comprehensive and accurate information about the health of these ecosystems in Malta, including inland surface waters, transitional waters, marine waters and groundwater. We understand that water is essential for sustaining life, and the quality of these sites can have a significant impact on human health and the environment. Therefore, we offer a range of services that enable us to assess and monitor their quality, including in situ measurements, sample collection, chemical and biological analyses, and more.

Our team of experts is highly trained and experienced in conducting in situ measurements, which involve taking measurements directly from the water body. This includes measuring water temperature, pH levels, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity. We use advanced equipment and techniques to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.

In addition to in situ measurements, we also collect water samples from various locations and depths in the water body. We use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to collect and transport samples to top-notch laboratories for analysis. We work with laboratories that are fully equipped with the latest technology to conduct a range of chemical and biological analyses, including testing for nutrient levels, heavy metal contamination, and the presence of pathogens.

We understand that the quality of water bodies can have a significant impact on the ecosystem's health, and therefore, we place great emphasis on monitoring the health of the ecosystem. We use biological indicators such as macroinvertebrates and algae to assess the health of the ecosystem. Our team of experts is highly trained in identifying and analysing these indicators, using them to get a good understanding of the health of the ecosystem.

At AIS Environment, we pride ourselves on providing accurate and reliable information to our clients. We work closely with the Environment & Resources Authority, which is the local competent authority responsible for monitoring and regulating the quality of water bodies in Malta. Our services are designed to meet the requirements of the authority and ensure compliance with local regulations.
